Discovering Scottsdale's Charms: Book A Guided Tour with Mayor Sam Campana

In the vibrant tapestry of American cities, Scottsdale, AZ, stands out as a gem of the Southwest. Its blend of art, culture, and natural beauty attracts visitors from around the globe. But behind the modern façade lies a rich history and a legacy of leadership that has shaped the city into what it is today. And at the heart of this narrative is Sam Kathryn Campana, Scottsdale's first female Mayor, whose vision and passion left an indelible mark on the cityscape.

Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing a personalized tour with Sam Campana alongside my family visiting from Europe. Despite having lived in Scottsdale for over 12 years, the excursion felt like a delightful rediscovery of the city's hidden treasures. Sam's wealth of knowledge and infectious passion for Scottsdale shone through at every turn, making her one of the most engaging and insightful tour guides I've encountered. With her signature style and wealth of information, Sam effortlessly illuminated the city's history, art, and culture, leaving us enriched and inspired by the end of our journey.

About Sam Campana

Born and raised in the West, Campana's journey to leadership was paved with dedication and a deep love for her community. Her tenure on the Scottsdale City Council from 1986 to 1994 provided a platform for her to advocate for the arts and spearhead initiatives that transformed Scottsdale into a cultural oasis.

As a founding member of the Scottsdale Arts Center Association (SACA) in 1975, Campana laid the groundwork for the city's thriving arts scene. Her leadership as the first volunteer chairman and first woman president of SACA paved the way for initiatives like Art in Public Places, which infused the city with creativity and imagination. Her efforts were recognized with prestigious awards such as Arizona's "Arts Advocate of the Year" in 1988 and the Maricopa Community College Arts Advocacy Award in 1991.

But Campana's contributions extended beyond the realm of arts and culture. Her strategic approach to city planning led to landmark projects like The Waterfront and collaborations with the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, demonstrating her commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development. In recognition of her outstanding service, Campana was inducted into the Scottsdale History Hall of Fame in 2006, cementing her legacy as a trailblazer in local governance. Her dedication to lifelong learning, exemplified by her completion of the Senior Executive Program for State and Local Officials at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, continues to inspire future leaders.

Come experience Scottsdale like never before, and let Mayor Campana be your guide to the heart and soul of The West's Most Western Town.
